Dental Assistant
PWS Dental Laboratory
1994-1995
I began my career as a dental assistant at PWS Dental Laboratory in August 1994, at the age of 16. Initially promised a day release to study dentistry, I was disappointed when my GCSE results precluded this opportunity. However, I continued in the role, earning £1.71 per hour for a fluctuating workweek of 40-44 hours.
My primary responsibilities included duplicating plaster models of teeth and, less successfully, mounting them on articulators. Waxing up, a core task of technicians, was also challenging for me. While not my primary focus, I did occasionally cast models of teeth.
In February 1995, I transferred to the Chrome department, a welcome change from my previous manager's scrutiny. Here, I enjoyed tasks such as casting (distinct from the Acrylic department), furnace loading and unloading, denture polishing and gold-plating, and recycling chrome off-cuts.
Unfortunately, my time at PWS Dental Laboratory was marred by unfair treatment from my boss, Cliff. Leaving the company in September 1995 was a liberating experience.
This job, while challenging, served as a valuable stepping stone. It helped me realise the importance of pursuing a career that genuinely interested me. Had I not made this initial misstep, I doubt I would have achieved the level of success I currently enjoy.
A personal note: Thank you, Howard.
During this period, the National Lottery launched, and I purchased my first-ever ticket. For more details, please refer to my blog post.
